On June 24, 1964 at 4:08 A.M, Marshalls Creek firemen
were awakened to respond to a tractor-trailer fire. Upon
their arrival, the rear wheels of the tractor were on
fire. The trailer was not placarded to warn the firemen
of the dynamite carried inside. Shortly after their
arrival, the trailer exploded killing three of our men
and seriously injuring two others. In their memory, we
dedicate this page. May they rest in peace.
This explosion started the chain of events that lead to
the creation of the Department of Transportation (DOT)
Emergency Response Guidebook. This book has changed the
way emergency personnel respond to incidents involving
hazardous materials.
